My own experience was rather interesting and in a class I took, I felt it has value and I want to share my experience. I took a woman’s study class last year that focused on inequality and it addressed white privilege. We also read the book The New Jim Crow and it was very enlightening. We watched some Time Wise lectures as well. Our professor wanted each of us to have a deeper understanding of what others face in regards to discrimination and privilege. He was very upfront from the beginning of class that the topics would be uncomfortable and his intent was to take you out of your comfort zone. One class he had each of us stand on a line in the middle of the room. He asked us questions and depending on how we answered, we would take a†¦show more content†¦I look at it like more of a scale with one end having very little to no privilege while the other end has a lot of privilege. The significant part is that between the two ends are all the people in the middle and how, where they fall on that scale is dependent on those things that make up privilege or barriers to privilege. That was evident by the final position of everyone in our group. We also hypothesized who would be furthest ahead and behind by race. Some people were very surprised by the outcome. The purpose was to show that yes there is white privilege but it’s not as simple as a yes or no when applied to an individual and how our learned bias affect who we perceive as having privilege.
